Family Maths Director's upcoming visit to Christchurch City Libraries

We are pleased to announce that the Family Maths Director, Len Cooper, will be in Christchurch during the week beginning 28th July 2008. Len will be facilitating courses for parents/teachers and families. Len is an accomplished facilitator for both Family Maths (it was his initiative which set up Family Maths in NZ), Maths Teaching and Learning and is also an accredited MOE Numeracy Facilitator. Family Maths courses introduce parents and teachers to enjoyable, practical maths activities that enhance and maintain mathematical skills learnt in the classroom.

Wednesday 30 July 2008: Family Maths Workshop

The Family Maths Workshop involves hands on experiences while covering key mathematical concepts and includes take home resources and games to use at home. Activities are adaptable to many levels and abilities. Come and have fun whilst learning mathematical strategies together. Limited numbers.

Thursday 31 July 2008: Parent Maths Workshops

The content for the Parent seminar/workshop include: How do children learn mathematics? What is happening in our classrooms? Numeracy and mental. How we can support our child's maths learning at home? Games and activities we can complete with our children. Some interactive maths sites suitable for parents and children.

Get involved with Web 2.0. Start your own community blog or wiki. Find out more. For people above 12 years old.

Tuesday 21 October 2008: Create a family history story book

A 2 part programme. Use your old photos and documents to begin the production of the story of your family.

Across the generations

Some of these programmes are suitable for families, including grandparents and children over 7 years. Ask for details when you enrol.

Tuesday 19 August 2008: Research Skills --More than Google.

Develop skills in research useful for homework etc. Discover strategies and tips for uncovering information on the internet.
For anyone over 10 years old. Children to be accompanied by adults.

Tuesday 26 August 2008: Family Maths Fun

Learn and use numeracy and patterning strategies to solve problems. Have fun with fractions and tessalation designs. Based at year 6,7,8 levels each session will cover key mathematical concepts and include take home resources and games to use at home. An adult must accompany the child for the 3 session programme.

Wednesday 10 September 2008: Researching and documenting family roots

A 3 part programme which helps you explore national and international resources and learn useful ways to record your family history information.

Thursday 11 September 2008: Create your CV

Discover current expectations of a successful CV and strategies to ensure your CV will be considered favourably. In session 2 work on your own personal CV. Suitable for ages 16 years +.

Tuesday 16 September 2008: Family project time

For family groups. Special technology creative topics of interest to these groups. Topics will be announced closer to the date. For children above 7 years and their Caregivers.

Tuesday 4 November 2008: What to read next?

How to decide what to read for you and your family? Suitable for children above 10 years accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday 2 December 2008: Buying and selling online

An overview. Hints on selling things before Christmas and buying things for Christmas.
